ENTHUSIASTIC ARTIST BLOG - I write a very popular art blog that focuses on zentangles and mandalas, and occasionally something else that tickles my fancy and inspires me to share. Posts include recent artwork, interesting art links, the Diva's weekly Zentangle challenge, drawing instructions for tangle patterns, and more. Also find a list of upcoming classes. Visit my blog. ZENTANGLE DRAWING CLASSES - Zentangle is an enchanting and simple method for creating beautiful images using structured patterns. It's easy to learn, fun, relaxing and is enjoyed by a wide range of skills and ages. You can learn more about it on the Zentangle website. (www.zentangle.com) I am a Certified Zentangle Teacher and I'm willing to travel. In Saskatoon, I schedule classes at various locations and would be happy to come to your group or give a private lesson. (The Zentangle® art form was created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas and is a registered trademark.)
I love detail and patterns, sparkle and whimsy. International or universal imagery has always been of greater interest to me than local or regional subject matter. I find designs and images from other cultures very appealing.
In my artwork you will find:
LANDSCAPES and TREES - North American style houses, onion domes, castles, and occasionally include pagodas, fishing huts, outhouses and tents. They are usually a bit wonky and fun, and sometimes architecturally impossible! Leafy trees, pine trees, baobabs, flowers and fields - also wonky and fun.
ZENTANGLE® - I discovered Zentangle in early 2009 and it immediately clicked: the intricate detail, repeated images or patterns, and the graphic qualities of drawing that I love. A true Zentangle is black ink on 3.5'x3.5' white paper and is non-representational. However, many who fall in love with it, including myself, take it further and do larger pieces, use color, other media, etc.. These extrapolations of the original form have come to be called Zentangle Inspired Art (or ZIA). My colored work is usually done in colored ink, colored pencil, and acrylic washes. I sometimes incorporate collage, tiny gems and other elements.
MANDALAS - Years ago I noticed that I occasionally chose a circular format for my artwork. I became interested in the mandala form and decided, to focus on it for a while. The circle has been a symbol, throughout history and across cultures, of eternity, wholeness, protection, and unity. A mandala has the additional symbolism of balance, transformation, and interconnection. Mandalas are often found in relation to spiritually-oriented sites or activities. Think of Gothic stained-glass rose windows, domed mosques, Tibetan sand paintings and North American aboriginal medicine wheels. When I create a mandala I am also alluding to the interconnection of everything in creation and my belief in the oneness of the human family.
